A recount of votes that&#8217;s being paid for by Eli Guzman, who lost to Gandara <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/11\/gandara-narrowly-defeats-guzman-in-las-cruces-district-1-race\/\" target=\"_blank\">by 18\u00a0votes<\/a>, and Richard Hall, who lost to Eakman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/11\/eakman-narrowly-defeats-hall-in-cruces-district-4-race\/\" target=\"_blank\">by 11\u00a0votes<\/a>, is tentatively scheduled for next Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the difference in votes being so slim, the candidates have chosen to exercise their right to apply for a recount,\u201d said Jeffrey Isbell, a local political operative who is\u00a0acting as a spokesman for both candidates.<\/p>\n<p>If the results change after Monday, the law dictates that a\u00a0candidate who has already been sworn in\u00a0will have to vacate the seat, according to Isbell.<\/p>\n<p>Guzman and Hall filed the paperwork for a recount Tuesday. They&#8217;re asking to recheck all\u00a0early and absentee votes and ballots cast at five polling places, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/departments\/public-information-office\/news-releases\/2015\/november\/recount-sought-in-election\" target=\"_blank\">news release<\/a> from the city states.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.state.nm.us\/Legislation_And_Resources\/2013nmelectlaws.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico\u00a0election law<\/a> allows candidates in municipal elections to request a recount as long as they&#8217;re willing to pay for it.
