This is still a proposal that must be approved by entire Senate, but most consider that a technicality that won\u2019t be a problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Referring to the massive amount of money available to increase the state\u2019s budget this year &#8211; $723 million \u2013 Smith said he\u2019s looking forward to a challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RYCswlgzglI\/AAAAAAAAAGI\/ptVnee_cjok\/s1600-h\/Jennings,+Tim.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RYCswlgzglI\/AAAAAAAAAGI\/ptVnee_cjok\/s200\/Jennings,+Tim.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5008192736339395154\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cI think it\u2019s going to be a tough year because of all the dollars,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The chairmanship was open because of the retirement of <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=260&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Fidel<\/a>, D-Grants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> Smith has been vice chair and basically run the committee for the last two years, but Sen. President <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=250\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Altamirano<\/a>, <st1:placename st=\"on\">D-Silver<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">City<\/st1:placetype>, originally proposed <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Jennings<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> being chair and <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=256&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Carlos Cisneros<\/a>, D-Questa, being vice chair, because they have more seniority than Smith.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The two Democrats who will run the Finance Committee are independent and have, at times, been at odds with the governor. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is making more of an effort to reach out to senators this session, but don\u2019t expect the Senate to be less independent than it has in past years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Other committee assignments weren\u2019t immediately disclosed. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tim Jennings of Roswell and John Arthur Smith of Deming will co-chair the Senate Finance Committee, Democratic leaders decided tonight.
