Bill Richardson called today to say my assertion that the governor is involved in the speaker of the House race is false.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Jon Goldstein said the governor is moving quickly to fill vacancies created by the resignations of Rep. Hector Balderas of Wagon Mound and Sen. Joe Fidel of Grants because constituents have asked him to do so. He said <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has been very careful to stay out of the speaker race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe\u2019s getting requests from constituents to hurry up and make an appointment so they can go to them with the capital outlay requests,\u201d Goldstein said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of ridiculous to conclude he\u2019s jumping into the leadership race just because he\u2019s moving quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As I pointed out earlier today, it\u2019s not just that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is moving quickly \u2013 it\u2019s that the governor has pushed five county commissions to act in a four-day period that just happens to give him barely enough time to make an appointment before Monday\u2019s caucus meeting. As far as government is concerned, that\u2019s light speed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But that\u2019s not the only reason I made this conclusion. Just about every House Democrat I\u2019ve spoken with about this \u2013 regardless of whether they support Ben Lujan or Ken Martinez in the speaker race \u2013 believes <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is involved. In addition, on this topic my sources outside the Legislature are very good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And that\u2019s all I\u2019m going to say about those sources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I find it quite believable that there are dual reasons to move quickly. It\u2019s reasonable to believe that constituents are anxious to make capital outlay requests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">How about this? I\u2019m standing by my sources who tell me the plan is to appoint Thomas Garcia, a Lujan supporter, to Balderas\u2019 seat before Monday\u2019s caucus meeting.
