(Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/09\/senators-introduce-dona-ana-county-wilderness-bill\/\">a bill<\/a> to designate the Organ Mountains and other areas in Do\u00f1a Ana County as wilderness pending in Congress, several groups plan a conference Saturday in Las Cruces to highlight the economic benefits of land conservation.<\/p>\n<p>The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Sens. <a href=\"http:\/\/tomudall.senate.gov\/\">Tom Udall<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a>, D-N.M. and sponsors of the pending bill, will be on hand for the conference, which is sponsored by the Hispano Chamber of Commerce de Las Cruces, High Tech Consortium of Southern New Mexico and New Mexico Wilderness Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the conference, according to a news release, \u201cis to learn from national and local experts about the range of economic development opportunities that can be developed in Do\u00f1a Ana County through the protection of important local landmarks such as the Organ Mountains as federal wilderness and national conservation areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWilderness designation has helped communities across America protect their nearby natural treasures and boost local economies,\u201d Gilbert Apodaca, President of the Hispano Chamber of Commerce de Las Cruces, said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWilderness economics and land conservation can create wonderful new opportunities for our region, particularly in attracting high-tech companies and workers,\u201d said Gary Gomes, President of the High Tech Consortium of Southern N.M.\u00a0 \u201cThese opportunities will benefit all of us in one way or another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=farm+and+ranch+museum,+las+cruces&amp;sll=37.0625,-95.677068&amp;sspn=52.77044,68.203125&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=farm+and+ranch+museum,&amp;hnear=Las+Cruces,+NM&amp;z=13\">Farm and Ranch Museum<\/a> in Las Cruces.
