Bill Richardson (Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\">Bill Richardson<\/a> announced today that his administration has notified 59 exempt employees that their jobs will be eliminated on Jan. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Combined with the 47 that are currently vacant, that will cut 106 total positions \u2013 or 20 percent of political appointees in the governor\u2019s administration &#8212; and save the state about $8.3 million, according to a news release from Richardson\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the governor has worked hard to cut spending with minimum impact to state employees, the reality is that we have to trim the number of exempt employees,\u201d Richardson spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said. \u201cWe value and appreciate the public service these employees provided to the State of New Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news release didn\u2019t list the employees whose jobs are being cut or other information about them. I\u2019ve filed a records request with the governor\u2019s office for information about the 59 employees.<\/p>\n<p>As I\u2019ve written before, I\u2019ve been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/08\/blacklisting-journalists-is-petty\/\">blacklisted<\/a> by the governor\u2019s office for months. However, the office is required by the state\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmag.gov\/pdf\/AGO%20IPRA%20Guide.pdf\">Inspection of Public Records Act<\/a> to respond to a formal request for records, so I can\u2019t imagine they\u2019ll ignore me this time.
