Assuming his narrow lead holds, Jack Eakman is the new representative of District 4 on the Las Cruces City Council.<\/p>\n

Eakman\u00a0narrowly won Tuesday with 44\u00a0percent of the vote to Richard Hall’s\u00a043 percent. Only 11 votes separated the two candidates, raising the question of\u00a0whether Hall\u00a0would seek a recount. Hall and Eakman\u00a0could not immediately be reached for comment.<\/p>\n

“Thank you, everyone,” Eakman wrote on Facebook<\/a>. “Every vote counts, doesn’t it?”<\/p>\n

The city has no automatic recount provision, so the cost would be Hall’s\u00a0if he seeks a recount.<\/p>\n

Assuming the results hold, Eakman\u00a0will replace Nathan Small, who chose not to seek re-election this year.<\/p>\n

A third candidate, Gilbert Vasquez, won 13 percent, or 183 votes. As NMPolitics.net reported, Vasquez filed paperwork asking Gov. Susana Martinez to erase a\u00a0felony conviction so he would be eligible to take office if he won\u00a0\u2014 but he doesn\u2019t meet Martinez\u2019s requirements<\/a> to be considered for a pardon.<\/p>\n
