{"id":961,"date":"2006-12-06T17:07:00","date_gmt":"2006-12-06T23:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/12\/a-republican-perspective-on-speaker-battle\/"},"modified":"2006-12-06T17:07:00","modified_gmt":"2006-12-06T23:07:00","slug":"a-republican-perspective-on-speaker-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/12\/a-republican-perspective-on-speaker-battle\/","title":{"rendered":"A Republican perspective on speaker battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">After talking with many Republicans about who they think should be the next speaker of the House, I\u2019ve found that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marioburgos.com\/2006\/12\/best-thing-they-could-do.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Mario Burgos\u2019<\/span><\/a> words this morning capture fairly well the sentiment among many GOP members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a posting headlined \u201cThe Best Thing They Could Do,\u201d the conservative Burgos warns Democratic House members that a vote to keep Ben Lujan as speaker \u201cwill be sending a clear message that the political corruption turned into an art form by Michael Montoya, Robert Vigil and Smiley Gallegos is alive and well in New Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Burgos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> writes, would lead to a backlash in two years, when \u201cNew Mexicans will send a clear message that they are tired of local politicians that look the other way while corruption flourishes at the expense of hard-working New Mexicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Three Republicans have suggested to me that, if U.S. Rep. Dennis Hastert had to give up his leadership position as speaker for not doing enough about concerns over former Rep. Mark Foley\u2019s interaction with Congressional pages, Lujan should not be allowed to keep his job as speaker because of his ties to Gallegos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The situations aren\u2019t quite the same, but some Democrats have conceded to me that it\u2019s a valid point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Despite his political leanings, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Burgos<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> doesn\u2019t really want Lujan to stay on so there will be a backlash against Democratic legislators in two years.
