{"id":9549,"date":"2009-11-19T07:37:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-19T14:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=9549"},"modified":"2009-11-19T07:37:00","modified_gmt":"2009-11-19T14:37:00","slug":"regents-to-name-nmsu%e2%80%99s-new-president-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/11\/regents-to-name-nmsu%e2%80%99s-new-president-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Regents to name NMSU\u2019s new president today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8560\" title=\"NMSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/NMSU.jpg\" alt=\"NMSU\" width=\"100\" height=\"113\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With another candidate withdrawing his name from consideration, regents at New Mexico State University have three candidates to choose from when they meet today to select the school\u2019s next president.<\/p>\n<p>But, considering that the regents held a closed-door meeting to deliberate on Tuesday and canceled a closed-door meeting scheduled for Wednesday, it\u2019s likely that they made their selection two days ago and negotiated with a candidate who has agreed to accept the job. Today\u2019s meeting is probably a formality and a chance to introduce NMSU\u2019s next president to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the final day before the new president is named wasn\u2019t without drama, as finalist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csupomona.edu\/~president\/bio.shtml\">Michael Ortiz<\/a>, the president of California State\u00a0Polytechnic\u00a0University in Pomona, sent a mass e-mail out to that campus stating that he had withdrawn his name from consideration for the NMSU job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe outpouring of support we have received over the past couple of weeks has been unbelievably moving. We are privileged to be part of this great community,\u201d Ortiz wrote in the Wednesday e-mail, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepolypost.com\/breaking-news-president-ortiz-to-remain-at-cal-poly-1.2089293\">that school\u2019s student newspaper<\/a>. \u201cIn the end, there is so much more we need to accomplish. We are facing the most difficult challenges in our history. To face these we have to come together as a community. Our students are relying on us. This is our fight, and we can\u2019t just walk away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finalist Richard Herman had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/11\/nmsu-president-finalist-withdraws-name-from-consideration\/\">already withdrawn his name<\/a> from consideration for NMSU\u2019s top job. Left in the mix are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unl.edu\/svcaa\/people\/barbara_couture.shtml\">Barbara Coutoure<\/a>, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_L._Oblinger\">James Oblinger<\/a>, professor and recently chancellor at North Carolina State University; and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lisa_Rossbacher\">Lisa Rossbacher<\/a>, president at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Ga.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/10\/nmsu-prez-finalist-list-should-raise-eyebrows\/\">As I\u2019ve written<\/a>, Oblinger has been dealing with scandal at his current school.<\/p>\n<p>The regents meet at 10 a.m. today in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmsu.edu\/General\/Maps\/buildings\/ed_serv.html\">Educational Services Center<\/a> on the NMSU campus in Las Cruces. The meeting will be <a href=\"http:\/\/mediasite-server.nmsu.edu\/ictmsite5\/Catalog\/pages\/catalog.aspx?catalogId=93fcbbbd-4cdb-4cbe-b376-dd29d634ba45\">webcast live<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New Mexico State University regents meet at 10 a.m. today to name the school\u2019s new president.
