Gov. Bill Richardson will stake his 2008 presidential hopes on winning the primary in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">South Carolina<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/storyonly\/2006\/12\/5\/12817\/5575\" target=\"_blank\">Markos Moulitsas Z\u00faniga<\/a>, who runs the most popular liberal blog around, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Kos<\/a>, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> will be joined by John Edwards and Wesley Clark in placing all bets on <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">South Carolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That may be why former N.M. Economic Development Department public information officer Katie Roberts abruptly left that job in September to move to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">South Carolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. As I reported <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2006\/09\/is-there-richardson-08-staffer-in.html\" target=\"_blank\">back then<\/a>, <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>\u2019s people said that wasn\u2019t why Roberts moved, but the South Carolina Democratic Party spokesman said otherwise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Officially, Roberts was there to work for the Democrats\u2019 gubernatorial candidate. But the state party\u2019s spokesman told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> in September that Roberts\u2019 move was at the request of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, and said it would be good for the presidential hopeful to have a worker in the state who knew the lay of the land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">After working on a gubernatorial campaign and a recount, Roberts has certainly learned a lot. I couldn\u2019t reach her for comment, but another source told me that Roberts hasn\u2019t finalized future plans and isn\u2019t currently in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">South Carolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Kos\u2019 claim about <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">South   Carolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> stems from Barack Obama\u2019s jump into the 2008 presidential spotlight. The conventional wisdom, Kos claims, is that Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack will win his home state\u2019s primary, and either John Edwards or Obama will come in second \u2013 Obama because his home state of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Illinois<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is next door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state>, Kos says, will be a battle between the union-friendly Edwards and the <st1:place st=\"on\">Southwestern  Richardson<\/st1:place>. <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> will be owned by New Englanders Hillary Clinton and John Kerry. In that state, Kos claims, \u201cthey hate <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> because he pushed to insert <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state> into the calendar ahead of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWith <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> out of the big picture thanks to Vilsack, and <st1:state st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:state> diluted by <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state>, <st1:state st=\"on\">South  Carolina<\/st1:state> may well decide our nominee in 2008,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\">Kos<\/st1:place> writes. \u201c<st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> thinks he can win the state (I\u2019m not sure how), and he, Edwards and Clark will stake their entire bids on the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBut given the state\u2019s large African American population, along with Obama\u2019s popularity with female voters (yeah, they love him), it\u2019s tough to see how the rest, splitting the dwindling white male vote, can overcome those hurdles,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\">Kos<\/st1:place> writes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The only person who might stop Obama, <st1:place st=\"on\">Kos<\/st1:place> writes, is Al Gore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">These are just the predictions of one man, but his blog is currently so influential that he\u2019s one man who has the attention of every politico in the nation. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If the king of lefty bloggers is to be believed, N.M.
