\"\"<\/a>Attorney General Patricia Madrid received a warm welcome in her hometown of Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> Friday afternoon as she announced the opening of a new consumer division branch office here. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

In attendance were many members of her family, including her mother, and also a myriad of public officials, both Democrat and Republican.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Former<\/st1:placename> State<\/st1:placetype> Rep. J. Paul Taylor said it was unfortunate that Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> lost her bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson, but said Madrid is young and has a bright political future ahead of her.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Rep. Joseph Cervantes also urged Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> to not drop out of public service. Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> has said she may run for U.S. Senate in 2008 or governor in 2010, which makes her a potential primary opponent of Cervantes.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Taylor and Cervantes praised Madrid<\/st1:state> for achieving her long-sought goal of opening an office in Las Cruces<\/st1:city>, the only office of the attorney general outside Santa Fe<\/st1:city> and Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. Recurring funding from the legislature should keep it open when Gary King takes the helm on Jan. 1.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of her last official acts as attorney general is the very thing she started out to do,\u201d Taylor<\/st1:city> said of Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, who leaves office at the end of the year.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a great thing that she comes back home to us at the end,\u201d Cervantes said. \u201cShe didn\u2019t forget us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> appeared tired after months of a nasty campaign that ended with her defeat. She said she was glad to be in Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for welcoming me home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Diana Marquez, deputy director of the attorney general\u2019s consumer division, said the office will miss Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re the best attorney general we\u2019ve ever had,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
