Opening it is something <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> has sought since she took office in 1999, but only in her last year in office was she successful in obtaining funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Because there hasn\u2019t been an office in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, the number of complaints coming from this county has been much lower than expected in a county this size, said Sam Thompson, attorney general spokeswoman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The term \u201cconsumer complaints\u201d covers a broad range of issues individuals have with businesses. The most common complaints relate to automobile sales, Thompson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Staff members in the office will attempt to mediate disputes, but they won\u2019t provide legal representation to individuals when out-of-court settlements can\u2019t be reached. If the office finds a pattern of fraud or other problems related to a specific business, it might then opt to sue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">For now, the office will be staffed by one attorney and one consumer advocate, Thompson said. There are other positions available, and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> will allow incoming Attorney General Gary King to fill those positions next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When <st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state> took office, the consumer complaints division operated only out of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. She expanded to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, and there was a sharp increase in the number of complaints made in that area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The grand opening for the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> office is at 1 p.m. Friday at its new facility, located at <st1:street st=\"on\"><st1:address st=\"on\">201 North   Church Street, Suite 315<\/st1:address><\/st1:street>.
