The past two governors have made the constitutional requirement of a balance of political power on the board meaningless by requiring members of their own party to switch political affiliation so they could be appointed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The new applicants for student regent, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/news\/ci_4744250\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a>, are undergraduates Amanda Lowry, 20; Mark Morris, 21; and Phillip Trujillo, 19. Graduate student applicants are Carolyn Dietrich, 45; Ed Kellum, 23; and Eric Montgomery, age unknown. They represent a mix of Republican, Democrat and independent \u2013 at least right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The appointee will replace outgoing student regent Sherry Kamali.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> will also be deciding whether to reappoint Laura Conniff to the board. Sources tell me <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> hasn\u2019t been entirely happy with Conniff because she has been fairly independent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There are currently three Democrats on the board, in addition to one Republican and Kamali, who isn\u2019t a <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> citizen and therefore not a registered voter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The New Mexico Constitution requires that no more than three can belong to the same party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That means <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> can\u2019t appoint two registered Democrats. He could, of course, ask one candidate to switch to another affiliation before being appointed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Based on past precedent, that is likely \u2013 and unfortunate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let the party switching begin.
