COMMENTARY:<\/strong> Grant Taylor donated $500 to help fund NMPolitics.net earlier this year. \u201cGood government is not achievable without good journalism,\u201d he told me in explaining his contribution.<\/p>\n

\u201cHeath Haussamen is an authority on demonstrable ethics in journalism, an expert in New Mexico politics and government, and an incisive investigative journalist,\u201d said Taylor, the director of communications and marketing for the New Mexico Association of Commerce and Industry. \u201cThe ways in which we consume news may be changing, but what is constant is the need to underwrite ethical reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u2018dogged pursuit of the truth\u2019<\/h3>\n

Fred Nathan, executive director of the Santa Fe-based policy organization Think New Mexico, recently gave $100.<\/p>\n

\u201cI support NMPolitics.net because I trust their substantive, nonpartisan approach and their dogged pursuit of the truth, wherever that might lead,\u201d Nathan said.<\/p>\n

It’s an understatement to call NMPolitics.net nonpartisan. Our only real ideology is holding power accountable, no matter who wields it; fighting for transparency; and helping everyone, regardless of their beliefs, have a voice in the conversation about bettering our society.<\/p>\n

Tom Mullins of Farmington, a Republican who ran for Congress in 2010, has donated to NMPolitics.net several times. He gave $50 earlier this year, saying journalists \u201cdo the heavy lifting for all of us to ensure the powerful answer difficult and sometimes unpleasant questions in a timely manner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Trustworthy insight\u2019<\/h3>\n

Emanuele Corso of Pe\u00f1asco gave $10 this year. He has been reading NMPolitics.net for years, and says, \u201cwhile I don\u2019t always agree with (Haussamen\u2019s) take, it is never because he slants the information.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn other words, NMPolitics is a trustworthy insight into New Mexico’s often murky and slippery political scene,\u201d Corso said. \u201cI hope Heath can sustain his efforts. Our contributions small and large will make that possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Angelica Rubio of Las Cruces, a social-justice activist, is currently signed up to make automatic, monthly $10 contributions. Rubio says she\u2019s \u201chumbled\u201d to have been donating for years \u2013 and she hopes you\u2019ll contribute too.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou may not agree with what is written at times, but the difference between a lot of news outlets and NMPolitics is that Heath is CONSISTENTLY impartial, and that\u2019s what matters to me,\u201d Rubio recently wrote in\u00a0a Facebook post<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Steve Monta\u00f1o of Las Cruces, a state government retiree, has donated several times, including giving $25 this year.<\/p>\n

\u2018Discussion without vitriol\u2019<\/h3>\n

When I wrote about my decision<\/a> to not call for embattled Secretary of State Dianna Duran\u2019s resignation, the NMPolitics.net community was clear: Most of you thought I was wrong to err on the side of Duran\u2019s due-process rights at the expense of the integrity of the Secretary of State\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

So, earlier this week, I wrote an article<\/a> about your disagreement with me.<\/p>\n

That illustrates what I\u2019m trying to do with NMPolitics.net. We’re a community with open discussions. You help shape the narratives. This is a partnership.<\/p>\n

As NMPolitics.net states on our\u00a0\u201cabout\u201d page<\/a>, we \u201caim\u00a0to do journalism that\u00a0fosters conversation\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0builds community<\/a>. We view\u00a0journalism as activism<\/a>\u00a0in the purest sense of the word: We should help all people become active participants in our society.\u201d<\/p>\n

So far, I think we\u2019re doing something right.<\/p>\n

In the almost five months since NMPolitics.net re-launched, more than 65,000 people have visited our website. We\u2019ve more than tripled the number of people who like our Facebook page from 800 to 2,800.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve had some really productive discussions on Facebook and the NMPolitics.net website that have helped people find common ground and build bridges.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an amazing undertaking and deserves recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n
