Susana Martinez<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Governor Martinez has always been open to discussing various proposals to reform campaign finance in New Mexico,&#8221; press secretary Michael Lonergan told NMPolitics.net. &#8220;In terms of what will be on the governor\u2019s call for the session, however, we haven\u2019t made any final determinations. That process is ongoing over the next few months.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In even-numbered years like 2016, the Legislature convenes for a 30-day session focused on the budget.\u00a0Only the governor can add other items to the agenda. In odd-numbered years lawmakers can introduce legislation related to any topic without the governor&#8217;s approval.<\/p>\n<p>Next year&#8217;s session starts Jan. 19.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The state&#8217;s campaign finance reporting system has recently been exposed to have serious flaws <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/10\/flawed-nm-campaign-reporting-system-needs-reform-many-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">that many say need fixed<\/a>.\u00a0The most prominent example of recent problems is the criminal case against the very official\u00a0who is charged with enforcing campaign finance law. That\u2019s\u00a0Secretary of State Dianna Duran, who is facing charges including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/08\/nm-secretary-of-state-charged-with-fraud-embezzlement-money-laundering\/\" target=\"_blank\">fraud, embezzlement, money laundering<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/10\/duran-faces-new-felony-charge-of-identity-theft\/\" target=\"_blank\">identity theft<\/a>\u00a0for allegedly\u00a0using campaign funds to keep her personal bank account in the black.<\/p>\n<p>Many other possible violations of campaign law have recently come to light.<\/p>\n<p>NMPolitics.net <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/10\/flawed-nm-campaign-reporting-system-needs-reform-many-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported Monday<\/a> on the need for reform and ideas for improving the system. For example,\u00a0Martinez <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/09\/denish-martinez-talk-about-prc-sos-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\">has called for<\/a>\u00a0more frequent campaign reporting and requiring the secretary of state to post its audits of candidates&#8217; finance reports online for the public to see.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
