During a vote of Republican House members today he received 63 votes, but Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, received 134.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cDuring the last week, I have urged my Republican colleagues to take a hard, critical look at our vision and our message,\u201d Pearce said in a news release. \u201cWhile I was not elected Republican Conference vice-chair, I believe I succeeded in achieving this more important goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce said Republicans, in the next two years, \u201cmust function as a vital, vigorous and effective minority \u2013 working in a bipartisan spirit to achieve the goals which reflect the values of our constituents while continuing to stand firm in our principals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He also said he was \u201chonored and humbled\u201d by the support he received.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cRepresentatives from small states always begin with a structural disadvantage, and I was blessed by the opportunity to represent <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> in this year\u2019s leadership elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Some have speculated in recent days that Pearce\u2019s attempt to seize more power was part of an effort to strengthen his base in preparation for a Senate primary against Rep. Heather Wilson when Pete Domenici retires. If that\u2019s the case, Pearce apparently has more work to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
