The answer: There isn\u2019t yet an answer.<a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/x\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/1600\/614512\/Martinez%2C%20Ken.jpg\"><\/a>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition to the more liberal wing of the Democratic Party that might support current Majority Floor Leader <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=210\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Martinez<\/a> or another candidate over Lujan, there are the Democrats who want reform. Should <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> opt to challenge Lujan, several sources tell me, the vote would be about 50-50.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> is not yet saying whether he\u2019ll challenge Lujan. The Democrats meet Dec. 18 to resolve this, and while <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> keeps his cards secret, there\u2019s a possibility that someone else will decide to challenge the speaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/x\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/1600\/632129\/Lujan%2C%20Ben.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/x\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/200\/197456\/Lujan%2C%20Ben.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>One insider told <a href=\"http:\/\/joemonahansnewmexico.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Monahan<\/a> earlier this week that <st1:city st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:city> would have 16 of the 22 votes needed to win, but the source referenced the liberal wing of the party and its new faces as probable <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> supporters. Two sources told me that insider is discounting many moderate or conservative Democrats from around the state who are fed up with the corruption in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Specifically, some are upset about Lujan\u2019s ties to Vincent \u201cSmiley\u201d Gallegos, the former legislator who resigned as director of the Region III Housing Authority this year after the entire state organization crumbled in scandal. Gallegos is a lobbyist with close ties to Lujan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">They\u2019re also upset over the $75 million for water lawsuit settlements that Lujan slipped into the capital outlay bill at the last moment without the knowledge of almost any other legislators earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lujan worked hard throughout the election season to win the votes needed to retain his position. He gave several hundred dollars each to most Democratic House members around the state, with additional gifts going to those in hot races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/x\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/1600\/991036\/Cervantes%2C%20Joseph2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/x\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/200\/505372\/Cervantes%2C%20Joseph2.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>If Lujan keeps the post, expect <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> to keep his. If <st1:city st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:city> ousts Lujan, there will be a short list of potential candidates for majority leader that might include <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=186&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Cervantes<\/a> of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. Cervantes also sought the position when <st1:city st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:city> got it a couple of years ago, but agreed to support <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> in exchange for his current position as chair of the judiciary committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Further down the chain of command, I\u2019m told that <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=185&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Jose Campos<\/a> of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Rosa<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is openly challenging Majority Whip <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=227\" target=\"_blank\">Sheryl Williams Stapleton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Voters in last week\u2019s election opted not to challenge the Democratic leadership of the state. Some Democrats are taking that with a sigh of relief and a realization that changes need to be made.
