Bill Richardson is asking President Bush to allow a Mexican woman in the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">United   States<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> illegally to stay because her 7-year-old son is an American citizen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The situation is a perfect example of the complexities of the immigration debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/apimmigrant11-16-06.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a>, sent a letter to Bush urging him to consider allowing Elvira Arellano to stay because of her son. The boy successfully lobbied <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Mexico<\/st1:country-region>\u2019s Chamber of Deputies earlier this week to approve a resolution calling for the <st1:country-region st=\"on\">United  States<\/st1:country-region> to suspend the deportation of his mother and other illegal immigrant parents of <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> citizens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The family has been staying at a <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Chicago<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> church since August in an attempt to prevent deportation, the news service reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe Arellano case puts a spotlight on the danger of not acting on a comprehensive immigration plan,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s letter states. \u201cInaction puts our most vulnerable citizens \u2013 the estimated three million American citizen children of illegal immigrants \u2013 at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Richardson reminded Bush, according to the news service, that the two have similar views on immigration, stating that \u201cyou and I have both advocated for sensible, fair changes to our immigration laws; updates that include tougher border security and shutting off the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs, as well as a realistic path to legalization for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants already here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> said deporting Arellano would create a \u201cterrible choice\u201d for the family \u2013 the boy could either leave his mother to stay in the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">United   States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, or \u201cforfeit his right to grow up an American.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Jon Goldstein, a spokesman for <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, told the news service that the governor was not asked to write to Bush, but learned of the case through news reports and believes the situation is a \u201cperfect example\u201d of why the nation needs immigration reform. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
