Sorg<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gill M. Sorg has defeated incumbent Councilor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.giljonesforcouncil.com\/\">Gil Jones<\/a> in the Las Cruces City Council District 5 race.<\/p>\n<p>Sorg has 1,163 votes to Jones\u2019 631 votes, according to unofficial results obtained by NMPolitics.net. That includes tallies collected from receipts posted on the doors of all five polling places in the district and early and absentee voting.<\/p>\n<p>Sorg, a candidate who was backed by the city\u2019s progressive movement, said in an interview that he is declaring victory. He has not yet talked with Jones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it makes a statement about what\u2019s going on here in Las Cruces,\u201d Sorg said of his victory. \u201cThere needs to be a change &#8212; a change for better planning, smart growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of Jones, Sorg said, \u201cI think he\u2019s a decent person and I look forward to working with him in the future. I certainly would listen to his words that he has to say, his thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones could not immediately be reached for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gill M.
