But in a city in which Republicans have lost election after election in recent years, such a mistake by the primary newspaper has the potential to affect a contest that\u2019s expected to be close \u2013 especially since Jones has been telling people, when asked, that he\u2019s a registered Democrat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a conservative Democrat,\u201d Jones said Sunday. \u201cI\u2019ve never been a Republican.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jones said he was registered as an independent for a time when he was 18, but he\u2019s spent \u201cvirtually my whole life\u201d as a Democrat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Sun-News <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/las_cruces-news\/ci_13690801\">corrected its error<\/a> today. The error has also been corrected in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/las_cruces-news\/ci_13688036\">online version<\/a> of the article.<\/p>\n<p>Jones is being challenged by Gill M.
