Another, President Sharon Wooden, is out of the country and apparently also not available by phone. Board Member Gene Gant, though he is in town, attended the meeting by phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Instead of resolving the situation today, Gant and board Vice President Chuck Davis voted to postpone any action and keep Superintendent Sonia Diaz on paid administrative leave for at least another six days. That came despite the protest of board Member Leonel Brise\u00f1o, who said the board needed to move into closed session to consider taking Diaz off leave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">State Rep. Joseph Cervantes said that, \u201cin government, inaction is action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/1600\/Cervantes%2C%20Joseph.0.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/200\/Cervantes%2C%20Joseph.0.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cThe message is, \u2018We don\u2019t want to meet. We don\u2019t want to act. We don\u2019t want to lead,\u2019\u201d Cervantes said. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty hard to say that this is a positive step in the education of our children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">State Sen. Leonard \u201cLee\u201d Rawson agreed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI think it\u2019s unfair, not just to Sonia, but to the staff and students, to not bring this thing to resolution,\u201d he said. \u201cI just wish they hadn\u2019t put it off. I just with they\u2019d get it resolved, because that\u2019s unfair to the people of the district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Rawson said he has spoken to many people in the past week about the controversy surrounding Diaz, and said the situation is \u201caffecting students more than most people realize.\u201d Because of that, he said, the board needs to act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI think it\u2019s unfortunate to leave the issue begging resolution,\u201d he said. \u201cThey could have given some direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many legislators, without taking sides in the fight over whether Diaz is doing a good job, have said they are concerned about the board\u2019s actions and may consider asking the state to take control of the district, depending on the outcome of the Diaz situation. Cervantes said the board\u2019s inaction today \u201cgives the legislative delegation further indication of where we need to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Without naming Brise\u00f1o, he did say, \u201cWe have to praise those on the board willing to show leadership and courage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Diaz said she didn\u2019t want to comment on the board\u2019s inaction beyond saying that she\u2019s \u201cterribly disappointed in the fact that the board did not act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m anxious to get back to work and follow the directives that the board gave me,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two legislators say the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education\u2019s inaction at today\u2019s meeting is disappointing.
