Stewart pushes clean energy bill in D.C."},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_8725\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8725\" title=\"Stewart, Mimi\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Stewart-Mimi.jpg\" alt=\"Mimi Stewart\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mimi Stewart<\/p><\/div>\n<p>WASHINGTON &#8212; State Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=HSTEW\">Mimi Stewart<\/a>, D-Albuquerque, traveled to Washington this week along with 46 other state legislators from 30 states to push Congress to pass a national clean energy bill.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart, who is serving as the western region co-chair of the Clean Coalition of Legislators for Energy Action Now, told NMPolitics.net she met with members of the White House staff and U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a>, D-N.M., on Thursday to outline the group\u2019s mission to help pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opencongress.org\/bill\/111-h2454\/show\">H.R. 2454<\/a>), which is perhaps best known for its controversial cap-and-trade provision.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/teague.house.gov\">Harry Teague<\/a>, D-N.M., was instrumental in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/09\/cap-and-trade-bill-has-small-refiners-%E2%80%98deeply-concerned%E2%80%99\/\">helping the legislation<\/a> pass the House, but it has yet to be voted on by the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart said she believes the bill\u2019s passage would create high paying \u201cgreen\u201d jobs in New Mexico and help reduce the country\u2019s dependence on foreign oil.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/hNTeFw01mhU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/hNTeFw01mhU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>New Mexico has been positioned to contribute ideas for nationwide clean energy policy reforms for years. Beyond both national labs&#8217; contributions to the Energy Department, the state has also enacted solar energy legislation to help home owners convert to solar electrical systems and created a Renewable Energy Transmission Authority. The state&#8217;s leaders continue to look at other ways to promote clean energy.<\/p>\n<p>New Mexico is one of several states recognized as a model for the country\u2019s new clean energy economy.<\/p>\n<p>Before traveling to Washington, Stewart said in a news release that state legislators play a unique role in clean-energy jobs policies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re elected representatives of the people. We know the businesses and labor issues in our states,&#8221; Stewart said. &#8220;Many of us see federal action as the launching pad for the next generation of innovation and prosperity in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While in Washington, the coalition formalized its mission and an action plan for each state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON &#8212; State Rep.
