Steve Pearce, R-N.M. in 2008.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition to Democrat Al Kissling\u2019s announcement that he will run again, State Rep. Joseph Cervantes, D-Las Cruces, and Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner Bill McCamley are considering running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Jeff Steinborn, who was elected last week to the state House, ran unsuccessfully for the congressional seat held by Pearce two years ago but was defeated in the primary. He said it\u2019s too early to think about whether he\u2019ll run again in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Kissling didn\u2019t face primary opposition this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cervantes said he won\u2019t make a decision on whether to run until after the 2007 legislative session ends in mid-March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/1600\/McCamley%2C%20Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/200\/McCamley%2C%20Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cI think that it would be wise for me to postpone any announcement or decision until after the legislative session,\u201d Cervantes said. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t want anyone in the legislature to second guess my intentions. \u2026 Naturally, I\u2019m looking for every opportunity I can to serve the state. Right now, I have a great opportunity to do that as chair of the (House) Judiciary Committee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">McCamley also said he\u2019s considering a run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m definitely considering it, and looking very closely,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s very early in the game, but I\u2019ll make a decision by April 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Unlike McCamley and Cervantes, Steinborn didn\u2019t say whether he\u2019s considering a run \u2013 but he didn\u2019t discount the possibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s way too early to even be thinking about those kinds of opportunities,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026 That\u2019s not my focus right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/1600\/Steinborn%2C%20Jeff.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/200\/Steinborn%2C%20Jeff.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The Democrats might be wise to attempt to get their ducks in a row and avoid a primary fight. Strong Democratic candidates ran against each other in 2002 and 2004, and they ended up spending a lot of money fighting each other and digging up the negative stuff so Pearce didn\u2019t have to do it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If Democrats have to fight a primary battle in 2008 and Pearce does not, Pearce can save any money he raises before June 2008 until the end of the campaign, and unleash a deluge of mailers, commercials and advertisements just before the election. Meanwhile, the successful Democrat will have to start from scratch raising money in June and will face that disadvantage the entire race, on top of the difficulty of running against an incumbent. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It appears there may be several Democrats battling for the right to take on U.S. Rep.
