{"id":868,"date":"2006-11-13T14:18:00","date_gmt":"2006-11-13T20:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/11\/will-ellins-stay-on-as-elections-supervisor\/"},"modified":"2006-11-13T14:18:00","modified_gmt":"2006-11-13T20:18:00","slug":"will-ellins-stay-on-as-elections-supervisor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/11\/will-ellins-stay-on-as-elections-supervisor\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Ellins stay on as elections supervisor?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/1600\/Ellins%2C%20Lynn.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/200\/Ellins%2C%20Lynn.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Now that the Nov. 7 general election has become the most successful operation run by <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> in recent years, many are wondering whether Elections Supervisor Lynn Ellins will stay on.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ellins said he hasn\u2019t yet made a decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m hired here until approximately the middle of January, when all possible chances of appeal have expired,\u201d Ellins said. \u201cI\u2019ll make a decision before then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ellins said he will spend the next few months helping further implement the recommendations of the county\u2019s task force on elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Clerk Rita Torres hired Ellins after firing former Elections Supervisor Mari Langford in June. At the time, Ellins was co-chair of the county\u2019s elections task force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Republicans and Democrats alike have expressed gratitude for the manner in which Ellins and his staff ran the general election. The elections bureau had all work, including the final tallying of provisional ballots, completed Saturday night, five days after the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s unheard of around here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/1600\/Garcia%2C%20Mary%20Helen.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6506\/2852\/200\/Garcia%2C%20Mary%20Helen.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>While we\u2019re on the subject of kudos for a job well done, I want to thank State Rep. Mary Helen Garcia, D-Las Cruces, for working tirelessly to convince her peers to switch to paper ballots. She was one of the first in the state to jump on board with the idea, and stayed up into the early hours of one night during the legislative session arguing with Republicans who tried to kill the proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Despite offers from other Democrats to relieve her as she fought the filibuster attempt, Garcia insisted on responding to hours of questions and debate herself. It paid off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Others take credit for this initiative, which has proven a good change in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>.
