Heather Wilson, R-N.M., claimed victory late Thursday in the hotly contested 1<sup>st<\/sup> Congressional District race, but Democratic challenger Patricia Madrid said she isn\u2019t ready to give up.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">With all precincts reporting, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> currently holds a lead of 1,607 votes out of more than 207,000 cast. There are 4,398 ballots left to be dealt with, but large number are provisional ballots, and many of those won\u2019t likely be counted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city> has 104,575 votes, or 50.4 percent, to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s 102,968 votes, or 49.6 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Madrid%2C%20Patricia.20.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Madrid%2C%20Patricia.20.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>If <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is right, she has overcome the biggest challenge of her political career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If that happens in the year of the Democratic tidal wave, it would speak volumes about <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and the respect she has earned. Nationally, the partisan Republicans who don\u2019t listen to or work for their constituents were knocked out of office, many by candidates who were weaker than <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, who was a strong candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At the same time, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> will likely have a boring two years, as Democratic leaders will give her little to do, knowing she\u2019ll be a prime target in two years. She may also be pressured by her party to take a strong stand on <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. If she jumps on board with the party message, she might damage the independence that won her votes this time around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If she doesn\u2019t, she might have less support from her party in a re-election bid in two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">All that said: In Do\u00f1a Ana County, provisional ballots have historically favored Democratic candidates. I don\u2019t know whether the same is true in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Bernalillo<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. But Brian Sanderoff, president of Research and Polling Inc., told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/511084nm11-10-06.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> that <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> would have to take the provisional ballots by a 3-to-1 ratio, assuming the number of provisional ballots rejected in past elections holds true this time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If you assume all provisionals will be counted, she\u2019d have to take them by a 2-to-1 margin, he told the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democrats allege that the Republican Party intentionally misdirected Democrat voters to incorrect polling places \u2013 an allegation Republicans deny \u2013 and say that means provisionals will heavily favor <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. That may be the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But don\u2019t forget the two Republican precincts that ran out of ballots and were shut down for about 30 minutes on Election Day. There are potentially valid claims on both sides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This race might end only after a recount.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
