{"id":852,"date":"2006-11-08T17:11:00","date_gmt":"2006-11-08T23:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/11\/garza-has-to-pay-thousands-to-commission\/"},"modified":"2006-11-08T17:11:00","modified_gmt":"2006-11-08T23:11:00","slug":"garza-has-to-pay-thousands-to-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/11\/garza-has-to-pay-thousands-to-commission\/","title":{"rendered":"Garza has to pay thousands to commission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition to being removed from the bench, Do\u00f1a Ana County Magistrate Judge Carlos Garza was ordered today to pay $16,760 to the Judicial Standards Commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That was for reimbursement of the costs of its investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The commission found that Garza used cocaine and abused his position to benefit a woman with whom he had a personal relationship. Because of the commission\u2019s findings, the New Mexico Supreme Court ordered Garza\u2019s immediate removal from the bench, a permanent ban on him ever seeking or holding judicial office again and the reimbursement of costs, according to Commission Director Jim Noel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The court\u2019s decision came after Noel and Garza each had an opportunity to argue their cases before the high court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I couldn\u2019t reach Garza for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gov. Bill Richardson will fill the vacancy on the magistrate court with a new appointment.
