They also picked up two House seats and one county commission seat, unless provisional ballots change any results. In this county, provisional ballots historically swing to Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Misquez%2C%20Ralph.4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Misquez%2C%20Ralph.4.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>But Sheriff Todd Garrison, the Republican incumbent who was appointed to the job 18 months ago by the commission, beat Democrat Ralph Misquez. The current numbers have Garrison with 19,333 votes, or 51.3 percent, to Misquez\u2019s 18,335 votes, or 48.7 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Misquez had the fewest number of votes of any Democrat running for a countywide race. Garrison said he noticed that he was the only local candidate to avoid the Democratic wave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere were people willing to cross party lines, and I\u2019m surprised and amazed,\u201d Garrison said. \u201cI\u2019m excited that it turned out this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Misquez called early this morning to congratulate Garrison on his victory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI did call Todd and wished him the best,\u201d Misquez said. \u201cIt was just one of those things. It\u2019s always tough to run against the incumbent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Both candidates ran clean, positive races, and Garrison said they agreed to remain friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201dHe\u2019s a good guy. He\u2019s a very good guy,\u201d Garrison said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Misquez, who has twice run unsuccessfully for the office, said he\u2019s done with politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard on the family,\u201d he said. \u201cBut our heads are still high, and we don\u2019t regret a thing.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If provisional ballots don\u2019t affect current results in other, closer races, the Republican sheriff will be the only GOP member to survive a Democratic wave that swept through Do\u00f1a Ana County on Tuesday.
