Maestas says he failed to report climbs to more than $11K"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>UPDATE, Sept. 11, 10:30 a.m.:<\/strong> Maestas sent a number of financial records and a letter about his corrected reports to the Secretary of State&#8217;s Office. He also sent those documents to the N.M. Foundation for Open Government, which provided them to NMPolitics.net. You can read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/MaestasSOSLetter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Maestas&#8217; letter to the secretary of state<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/MestasAmendments.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">amended reports<\/a> and an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/MaestasAdditionalCorrection.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">additional corrected page<\/a>. We originally posted copies of bank records but took that link down because some donors&#8217; account numbers weren&#8217;t redacted in documents Maestas provided to FOG.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now state Rep. Antonio \u201cMoe\u201d Maestas says he failed to report more than $11,000 in campaign contributions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfis.state.nm.us\/media\/CandidateReportH.aspx?es=17&amp;ot=2&amp;o=27&amp;c=127&amp;p=0&amp;d=&amp;ct=0&amp;fn=&amp;ln=maestas\" target=\"_blank\">in 2014<\/a>. He&nbsp;has filed amended reports to correct the record.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_81940\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 336px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-81940\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Maestas-Antonio-Moe-336x254.jpg\" alt=\"Antonio &quot;Moe&quot; Maestas\" width=\"336\" height=\"254\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Courtesy photo<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Antonio &#8220;Moe&#8221; Maestas<\/p><\/div>The total Maestas, D-Albuquerque, failed to report is $11,170, according to a list <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/642468\" target=\"_blank\">the Albuquerque Journal<\/a> says he provided. The Journal didn&#8217;t publish the list.<\/p>\n<p>We have some additional questions about the situation, but Maestas hasn&#8217;t responded to questions from NMPolitics.net.<\/p>\n<p>A week ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/09\/rep-maestas-omitted-thousands-of-dollars-from-finance-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\">KOB-TV reported<\/a> that it discovered $4,250 in contributions lobbyists and political committees reported giving Maestas that he left off his finance reports.&nbsp;The news organization&nbsp;said there are still questions about what Maestas did with some of his money. It identified three times in 2014 that Maestas took $1,000 in cash from his campaign account for \u201cpaid canvassing teams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doing that, the Journal reported,&nbsp;&#8220;raises the question of whether the expenditures complied with a state law that requires disbursements from campaign accounts \u2013 except those of $100 or less from a petty cash fund \u2013 to be done by check.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/642468\" target=\"_blank\">the Journal<\/a>, which spoke with the office of Secretary of State Dianna Duran:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAt this point, Rep. Maestas\u2019 campaign finance reports have been assigned to our ethics staff for review to make a determination regarding whether further action is needed,\u201d said Ken Ortiz, a spokesman in Duran\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Duran herself was recently charged by the attorney general with crimes including illegally using her campaign contributions to cover personal spending at casinos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">According to Ortiz, Maestas paid fines of $1,175 in April of this year for a late 2014 filing, and $100 related to a late 2012 filing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">The Journal quoted a letter Maestas sent to Common Cause New Mexico and the N.M. Foundation for Open Government in which he wrote, &#8220;This was an error on my part that won\u2019t be repeated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">After KOB reported that Maestas failed to file a required report on time earlier this year, he said something similar: &#8220;There\u2019s no excuse, it\u2019ll never happen again.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATED: Now state Rep.
