{"id":80646,"date":"2015-09-03T14:56:14","date_gmt":"2015-09-03T20:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=80646"},"modified":"2015-09-03T19:44:11","modified_gmt":"2015-09-04T01:44:11","slug":"its-business-as-usual-at-the-secretary-of-states-office-chief-of-staff-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/09\/its-business-as-usual-at-the-secretary-of-states-office-chief-of-staff-says\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s business as usual at the Secretary of State&#8217;s Office, chief of staff says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article has been updated to clarify that Duran has not been in the office this week.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The chief of staff in the Secretary of State&#8217;s Office says it&#8217;s business as usual there in spite of the fact that the elected official who runs the office, Dianna Duran, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/08\/nm-secretary-of-state-charged-with-fraud-embezzlement-money-laundering\/\" target=\"_blank\">facing criminal charges<\/a> related to abusing the state&#8217;s campaign finance system.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55834\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 336px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-55834\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Duran-Dianna-336x232.jpg\" alt=\"Dianna Duran\" width=\"336\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Duran-Dianna-336x232.jpg 336w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Duran-Dianna.jpg 518w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Courtesy photo<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dianna Duran<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Dianna Duran is still the secretary of state and is in constant contact with the leadership team in conducting the day-to-day operations of the office,&#8221; Chief of Staff Ken Ortiz told NMPolitics.net by email. &#8220;The office continues to conduct its daily operations as usual.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have many daily obligations to meet and a good and professional staff focused on completing this work,&#8221; Ortiz wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He also said Duran &#8220;has not been in the office this week, although our leadership team has been in contact with her in conducting the day-to-day operations of the office.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NMPolitics.net reported Tuesday that experts believe the state&#8217;s campaign finance information <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/09\/states-campaign-finance-info-appears-to-be-safe-experts-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">appears to be safe<\/a>\u00a0in spite of the fact that Duran is accused of abusing\u00a0that very system &#8212; which her office is in charge of maintaining.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz also said\u00a0the system is safe.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As always, campaign finance and lobbyist report records are submitted and stored electronically in a database. User roles and permissions are in place to appropriately restrict access to these records,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;In addition, the system is backed up regularly and an audit trail of record activity is maintained. Also, our office has requested a full database archive be sent to us by the vendor that maintains the system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Duran&#8217;s attorney hasn&#8217;t responded to questions about her current involvement in the work at the secretary of state&#8217;s office or a question about whether she&#8217;s considering resigning.
