{"id":765,"date":"2006-10-25T09:44:00","date_gmt":"2006-10-25T15:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/10\/madrid-comment-reveals-troubled-political-system\/"},"modified":"2006-10-25T09:44:00","modified_gmt":"2006-10-25T15:44:00","slug":"madrid-comment-reveals-troubled-political-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/10\/madrid-comment-reveals-troubled-political-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Madrid comment reveals troubled political system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Madrid%2C%20Patricia.17.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Madrid%2C%20Patricia.17.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>A comment made by Patricia Madrid during the 1<sup>st<\/sup> Congressional District debate Tuesday night was exemplary of what\u2019s wrong with politics.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, a Democrat, was asked about $125,000 given to her political action committee by Stan Fulton, the owner of the Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. Fulton gave the money in two installations, one just before and the other just after Madrid formally opposed last year the proposal by the Jemez Pueblo to build a casino 10 miles away in Anthony. She took the money despite the fact that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Fulton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> admitted he\u2019s tossing money around to try to defeat the Anthony proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s money I\u2019ve called on <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> to <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2006\/07\/politicos-should-return-money-from.html\" target=\"_blank\">return<\/a>, but she has not done that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Wilson%2C%20Heather.7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Wilson%2C%20Heather.7.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cI do think you have to be careful about taking large sums of money from lobbyists,\u201d <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> said at the debate. \u201cBut even if you do, it is only to give them access to let you know about what their concerns are. Certainly it\u2019s not to have you vote or rule in any certain way or obligate you in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Heather Wilson, Madrid\u2019s incumbent, Republican opponent, responded appropriately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m amazed at what I just heard,\u201d she said, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/505742nm10-25-06.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a>. \u201cNo one buys access in my office. Any New Mexican that wants to speak to me, it\u2019s not conditional on paying at the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">I\u2019m skeptical of <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city>\u2019s assertion that she doesn\u2019t do the same thing, but <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s comment was egregious. Unfortunately, her thinking is rampant in politics. Gov. Bill Richardson does it. U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce does it. The Bush White House does it.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">A politician who gives better access to the rich is as hypocritical as a church that lets well-dressed people sit up front and makes the homeless stand in the back.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">Our democracy is intended to serve all people equally, not give preferential treatment to the rich. If <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and other politicians give better access to corporate moguls than everyday citizens, they have lost sight of the jobs they were elected to do.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\"><span style=\"color:black;\">Fulton<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:city><span style=\"color:black;\"> doesn\u2019t even live here. He has a couple of homes in other Western states. It\u2019s true that his casino creates jobs here, but it takes money from gamblers in return. That\u2019s the deal. Additional access to politicians to keep rival businesses out of the market should not be allowed.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">That\u2019s because a decision on whether a casino is built in Anthony should be up to the citizens and the leaders they elect \u2013 not the corporations.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">Do the impoverished Jemez, who can\u2019t afford a $125,000 entry fee, get equal access to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>? Do all the people in Anthony and surrounding areas who support the casino?<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">Do the everyday citizens who agree with <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Fulton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>?<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">The implication of her comment is that they don\u2019t.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">Again, this isn\u2019t a criticism of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> or Democrats only. A check of finance reports reveals that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Fulton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> gives primarily to Republicans, and Republicans are just as guilty of giving special treatment to those who give a lot of money.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color:black;\">This is the single greatest problem with our current political system.<\/span> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A comment made by Patricia Madrid during the 1st Congressional District debate Tuesday night was exemplary of what\u2019s wrong with politics.
