{"id":7562,"date":"2009-10-08T11:14:32","date_gmt":"2009-10-08T17:14:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=7562"},"modified":"2009-10-08T11:14:32","modified_gmt":"2009-10-08T17:14:32","slug":"santa-fe-realtor-on-probation-for-voter-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/10\/santa-fe-realtor-on-probation-for-voter-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Santa Fe realtor on probation for voter fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s a lot of talk about alleged voter fraud, but it isn\u2019t often that you see someone get convicted of trying to vote fraudulently in someone else\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s exactly why a Santa Fe realtor is on probation, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santafenewmexican.com\/Local%20News\/Realtor-snared-in-voter-fraud\">The Santa Fe New Mexican<\/a> is reporting.<\/p>\n<p>Teresa Monahan, according to the newspaper, \u201cwas charged and pleaded guilty in June to attempting to cast a ballot in the name of her dead brother\u201d in a Santa Fe special election for a proposed tax on expensive homes that would have helped pay for affordable housing.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal to add a 1 percent fee \u201con the portion of any home sale exceeding $750,000 and put the proceeds into a trust fund to support affordable housing programs\u201d was narrowly defeated, the newspaper article states.<\/p>\n<p>From the newspaper\u2019s article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMonahan, 64, cast her own early ballot in the election. Then on Feb. 12, according to county records, she requested an absentee-by-mail ballot for Thomas E. Monahan, who had died the prior December.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When county election officials caught the attempt, the newspaper reported, Monahan \u201cowned up to the forgery right away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monahan\u2019s attorney, Dan Marlowe, told the newspaper the act was \u201ctotally out of character\u201d for Monahan, who had worked for decades as an investigator for state agencies including the attorney general.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was under unbelievable stress and strain. She was actually taking care of her brother in the last years of his life, and it was just sending her off the deep end,\u201d the newspaper quoted Marlowe as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth-degree felony conviction included a conditional discharge, meaning it will be erased from Monahan\u2019s record in June if she complies with the terms of her probation.
