{"id":695,"date":"2006-10-10T10:28:00","date_gmt":"2006-10-10T16:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/10\/the-international-scene-support-peace-in-uganda\/"},"modified":"2006-10-10T10:28:00","modified_gmt":"2006-10-10T16:28:00","slug":"the-international-scene-support-peace-in-uganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/10\/the-international-scene-support-peace-in-uganda\/","title":{"rendered":"The international scene: Support peace in Uganda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If I may discuss international politics for a moment\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Today there are hundreds of activists in <st1:city st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:city>, <st1:state st=\"on\">D.C.<\/st1:state> learning about the tentative peace talks now taking place in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Uganda<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. Rebels with the Lord\u2019s Resistance Army, who have fought and oppressive, brutal, 20-year war in the northern part of that country, have agreed to talks with the Ugandan government that might end the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tens of thousands of civilians have been maimed or killed by the rebels, and more than 25,000 children have been abducted from towns and camps and forced to be soldiers or sex slaves. The government has massed people into what it calls \u201cprotected villages\u201d that has almost 2 million people displaced and an estimated 1,000 dying each week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I wrote in April about an event in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> that was part of a larger effort to bring attention to the situation.
