{"id":6874,"date":"2009-09-26T09:03:17","date_gmt":"2009-09-26T15:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=6874"},"modified":"2009-09-26T09:05:12","modified_gmt":"2009-09-26T15:05:12","slug":"mccamley-announces-candidacy-for-public-regulation-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/09\/mccamley-announces-candidacy-for-public-regulation-commission\/","title":{"rendered":"McCamley announces candidacy for PRC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6664\" title=\"McCamley, Bill\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/McCamley-Bill.JPG\" alt=\"McCamley, Bill\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Former Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/billmccamley.com\/\">Bill McCamley<\/a>\u00a0declared on Friday his intention to run for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmprc.state.nm.us\/\">Public Regulation Commission<\/a>\u00a0seat being vacated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmprc.state.nm.us\/commissioner5.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Sandy Jones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthics, health care, energy and economic development will be my focus and my mission on the commission,\u201d McCamley said in a news release. \u201cWe need a new era of ethical leadership, with leaders who are focused on putting people ahead of special interests and narrow agendas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCamley&#8217;s release states that he has &#8220;a strong record on ethics during his tenure on the Do\u00f1a Ana County Commisson.&#8221; He\u00a0wrote and convinced his peers to pass\u00a0a new ethics ordinance, and he seved in 2007 on the governor&#8217;s ethics task force.<\/p>\n<p>McCamley is a member of the state board for <span id=\"lw_1253975216_6\">Common Cause<\/span>, and has authored a column <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/08\/fighting-corruption-will-improve-our-lives\/\">published on this site<\/a>\u00a0on the <span id=\"lw_1253975216_7\">effects of corruption<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Jones announced earlier this week that he will <a href=\"..\/2009\/09\/jones-will-run-for-land-commissioner-not-re-election\/\">run for state land commissioner<\/a> next year instead of seeking re-election to the District 5 PRC seat. McCamley is the first to declare his candidacy to replace Jones.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"lw_1253975216_29\" style=\"BORDER-BOTTOM: medium none; BACKGROUND: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; CURSOR: hand\">&#8220;<\/span>I want to fight for and create policies that protect the best interests of the everyday person,&#8221; McCamley said.<\/p>\n<p>While on the commission, McCamley pushed to establish residential solar energy districts in the state. He said New Mexico must be &#8220;a national leader in new energy&#8221; both for the jobs it will create and to help America become energy independent.<\/p>\n<p>McCamley\u00a0also worked with county health-care providers to increase communication and efficiency, which his news release said has led &#8220;to the provisions of more care to more people.&#8221; He said he has &#8220;a unique perspective&#8221;\u00a0on health\u00a0care &#8220;since I\u2019ve worked on health policy and I\u2019ve also gone without health insurance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As <span id=\"lw_1253975216_21\">health insurance reform<\/span> moves forward in America, the PRC has the authority to create and enforce regulations over the <span id=\"lw_1253975216_22\">state health insurance<\/span> industry,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We must protect the average citizen in New Mexico so that costs are cut and that everyone has access to coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCamley served one term on the county commission, <a href=\"..\/2008\/12\/mccamley-evans-say-farewell-to-county-commission\/\">leaving office in December<\/a>. He opted against seeking re-election in 2008 and instead ran for Congress, but he narrowly lost in last year\u2019s Democratic primary <a href=\"..\/2008\/06\/teague-wins-democratic-2nd-district-primary\/\">to Harry Teague<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>McCamley, who lives in Las Cruces, has degrees from New Mexico State University and Harvard University. In addition to his service on the county commission, he has worked for a nonprofit on r<span id=\"lw_1253975216_25\">ural economic development<\/span> issues and as a real estate agent. McCamley currently works for New Mexico State University as a development officer in the College of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n<p><em>As I\u2019ve disclosed in the past, I\u2019m friends with McCamley.
