Bill Richardson is almost ready to show the world he isn\u2019t afraid to take a stand on the issue of cockfighting.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But we\u2019ll have to wait until just before the legislative session to learn what position he\u2019ll take.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">According to a column in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/news\/ci_4460124\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a>, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> told the newspaper\u2019s editorial board last week that he will have a position by the start of the session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMy position is that I will have a position, very clear, and I\u2019ll announce it right before the legislature,\u201d the newspaper quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> drew national ridicule from Jay Leno and others in April, when he said during a visit to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> that he hadn\u2019t made up his mind on cockfighting and said there were good arguments on both sides of the issue. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI still believe that,\u201d the newspaper quoted <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> as saying. \u201cBut I do think it\u2019s circulated enough that it\u2019s time to just deal with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is one of two states where cockfighting is still legal, though many counties, including Do\u00f1a Ana, have outlawed the practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While I have no inside knowledge about what position the governor will take, here\u2019s the prediction of the cynic in me: He\u2019ll take a stand against cockfighting, and maybe even give the proposed ban the push it needs to get through the legislature. But he doesn\u2019t want to do it until January so he can let this election pass. He wants 60 percent of the vote, and that means he needs the rural, Hispanic voters his campaign has been targeting, many of whom support cockfighting. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It would seem that Gov.
