His comments drew ire from several prominent Democrats who quickly jumped to the city&#8217;s defense.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/joaquin-castro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joaquin Castro<\/a> of San Antonio said Trump \u201cpaints a very scary and unfair picture of our border cities, particularly in Texas &#8230; But the people of Texas know that the president is lying, that these are wonderful places, that they&#8217;re safe cities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think even [Texas U.S. Sens.] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/john-cornyn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Cornyn<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/ted-cruz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ted Cruz<\/a> would tell you that, and if they wouldn&#8217;t, then I dare them to go to those places and say differently,\u201d Castro added.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elpasotimes.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2019\/02\/05\/fact-check-state-union-trump-el-paso-crime-rate-fence\/2784362002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fact check<\/a> of the president\u2019s speech published by the El Paso Times on Tuesday noted that violent crime in the border city actually peaked in 1993, then fell by more than 30 percent between that year and 2006.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Construction of the barrier in El Paso didn\u2019t begin until 2008, the Times reported. El Paso\u2019s crime rate has continued to drop in the years since, from 457 crimes for every 100,000 residents in 2009 to 393 in 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2016\/02\/23\/border-communities-have-lower-crime-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to FBI statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Trump will host the rally, which is set for Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. Mountain Time, at the El Paso County Coliseum. It will be his seventh rally in Texas and his first in El Paso since he began his race for president in June 2015, according to a news release.<\/p>\n<p>El Paso is the home of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/beto-orourke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beto O&#8217;Rourke<\/a>, the former Democratic congressman and U.S. Senate nominee who is now considering a presidential run.
