Archuleta<\/a> is being challenged by <a href=\"http:\/\/olgapedroza.org\/\">Olga Pedroza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the District 5 race, Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.giljonesforcouncil.com\/\">Gil Jones<\/a> will be challenged by Gill M. Sorg and Christopher A. Micklevitz.<\/p>\n<p>In the District 6 race, Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharonthomasforcitycouncil.org\/\">Sharon K. Thomas<\/a> will be challenged by James W. Harbison.<\/p>\n<p>Municipal Judge James T. Locatelli will run unopposed.<\/p>\n<p>All of that, of course, assumes that the city clerk certifies on Tuesday that those who filed to run submitted the required number of signatures to appear on the ballot &#8212; 25 from registered voters in the district for council candidates and in the city for judicial candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Absentee voting by mail begins Oct. 7, and in-person absentee voting begins Oct. 14. Election Day is Nov. 3.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve received candidate announcements from most of those who filed to run on Tuesday. Here\u2019s a bit about each of those who have sent me announcements:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6727\" title=\"Archuleta, Dolores\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Archuleta-Dolores.jpg\" alt=\"Archuleta, Dolores\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Dolores Archuleta<\/h3>\n<p>Archuleta has represented District 3 since 2001. According to her news release, she is \u201ccommitted to continuing to work with constituents and other community leaders to bring economic development to the area, to advance educational opportunities for the youth of Las Cruces and to improve the quality of life for all citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also \u201cexpressed a need to do more to deter crime in our neighborhoods, to bring good, high-wage jobs to the area and to create an environment that generations of Las Crucens can enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Archuleta has been in office, the city has broken ground on a new convention center, aquatic center and city hall, and she has \u201cplayed an integral role\u201d in a proposal to create a regional recycling program, the release states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have come a long way since my election in 2001,\u201d she added, \u201cbut there is still so much more to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6726\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6726\" title=\"Pedroza, Olga\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Pedroza-Olga.jpg\" alt=\"Olga Pedroza\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Olga Pedroza<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Olga Pedroza<\/h3>\n<p>Pedroza said in a news release that it\u2019s time \u201cthat our traditional neighborhoods receive energetic representation on the city council. We need economic development that benefits all of our residents and not just a few.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pedroza, 66, is a former elementary school teacher who has a law degree from the University of New Mexico. She worked in private practice, as an attorney for the state and for 17 years for Southern New Mexico Legal Aid &#8212; 16 of them as the managing attorney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI admired my clients greatly, and in trying to solve their legal problems, I began to understand how their lives could be improved by good representation in the public arena,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to make sure that the people of my district have a real and active voice in city government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among Pedroza\u2019s top priorities are education and economic development. According to the news release, she wants to partner with the schools and \u201cdevelop growth policies supportive of community life.\u201d The release states that she is \u201cespecially interested in bringing the benefits of the new energy economy to the young people of our community through internships, vocational training and local jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also said the city \u201cneeds to be pro-active in weatherization, solar energy and green grid technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Gil Jones<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_6725\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6725\" title=\"Jones, Gil\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Jones-Gil.jpg\" alt=\"Gil Jones\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gil Jones<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A news release from the campaign of Jones, who is seeking his second term, states that he \u201chas brought integrity, leadership and hard work to District 5, addressing key issues in Las Cruces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones, the release states, \u201chas taken on long-term flooding and growth issues, and brought the first public swimming pool in 40 years to District 5.\u201d He has also chaired the Extraterritorial Zoning Authority and served on the Metropolitan Planning Organization and South Central Regional Transit District.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve worked hard in the past four years as a city councilor to guide over $17 million dollars of city projects in District 5 that have led to improved flood control, better streets, parks, affordable housing and other important infrastructure improvements,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResponsible growth puts the needs of the community before the needs of the developers,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen our community\u2019s largest developer did not keep his agreement with the city, I led the effort for the City of Las Cruces to file a lawsuit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones, who has a background in \u201cagriculture, business and community service,\u201d wants to \u201ccontinue making Las Cruces a better place than when he was first elected,\u201d the release states.<\/p>\n<h3>Gill Sorg<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_6724\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6724\" title=\"Sorg, Gill\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Sorg-Gill.jpg\" alt=\"Gill Sorg\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gill Sorg<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sorg pointed to the district\u2019s \u201cproblems with flooding, traffic congestion, dust and incomplete subdivisions as just a few of the results of a decision-making process that favored a single developer rather than common-sense planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called for thoughtful growth that \u201cpreserves our way of life\u201d and said the city needs to \u201cpay as much attention to the revitalization, health and livability of existing neighborhoods as to the building of new ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he\u2019ll focus on \u201cSustainable economic development, transparency and accountability in governance, and good regional planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur district has suffered in recent years from the poor planning of earlier city councils,\u201d Sorg said. \u201cOver the past two years the mayor and city council have begun to stand up for the people of Las Cruces. I want to support and continue that process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With training as a biologist and work as a contract manager, Sorg said he understands good governance, saying, \u201cA community of people is like any ecosystem &#8212; to be healthy and sustainable it needs to find a balance among competing interests. We need to make sure the peoples\u2019 interests are included in that balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Sharon Thomas<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_6723\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6723 \" title=\"Thomas, Sharon\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Thomas-Sharon.jpg\" alt=\"Sharon Thomas\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sharon Thomas<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In her two years on the council, Thomas has \u201cworked hard to ensure greater transparency, efficiency and participation in city government\u201d and has \u201cbeen a strong advocate for better comprehensive planning,\u201d according to a news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThoughtful development is key not only to our community\u2019s prosperity but also to maintaining and improving the quality of life for the people of Las Cruces,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past two years, according to the release, Thomas has \u201cworked for the creation of safe, walkable neighborhoods, citizen involvement in school-location decisions and greater integration of homeowner associations in decisions that affect their residents.\u201d She has also \u201cplayed a key role in the development of bike lanes on city streets, efforts to control dust on the city\u2019s east side, and river-to-mountain recreation corridors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaxpayers can\u2019t afford piecemeal planning that increases the cost of infrastructure and hurts our quality of life.\u00a0We need intelligent development,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cThe <a href=\"http:\/\/vision2040.nmsu.edu\/\">Vision 2040<\/a> regional comprehensive plan, as well as the new city strategic plan, will be important for bringing everyone together to build a vibrant, attractive city for residents and businesses alike.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>James Harbison<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_6722\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6722 \" title=\"Harbison, Jim\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Harbison-Jim.jpg\" alt=\"Jim Harbison\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jim Harbison<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Harbison, an Army veteran and retired corporate executive, is involved in a number of public service activities, including serving on the board of the High Range Neighborhood Association, helping form neighborhood watch programs and working with Scottish Rite Dyslexia and early childhood learning programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve taken a long, hard look at the race and have decided that our city is in need of real leadership and a new direction,\u201d he said in a release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a retired businessman and military leader, I have a vision to strengthen the future of our city and preserve its rich heritage,\u201d Harbison said. \u201cWe need to pursue a more prudent fiscal course that develops smarter more effective uses of public funds that will minimize the impact on our residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harbison has served as human resources director in a large medical firm and training director of a nationwide manufacturing company. During his military career, he was awarded the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star for Valor and OLC, and Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star.
