It&#8217;s about six minutes long, so give it a couple of minutes to load.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Macias%2C%20Fernando.9.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Macias%2C%20Fernando.8.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Newly appointed district judges Fernando Macias and Lisa Schultz, both fighting election battles to keep their jobs past December, were sworn in Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Hundreds were in attendance at the Third Judicial District Court in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> for the grand event that included a mariachi band and literally dozens of elected officials, including Gov. Bill Richardson, Speaker of the House Ben Lujan and Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Schultz%2C%20Lisa.6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Schultz%2C%20Lisa.6.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>In some ways, the event had the feel of a Richardson-for-president or Chavez-for-governor rally, as many spoke fondly of the two, who received several rounds of applause from the group. In speeches, others predicted bright futures for both men. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> entered the room to applause and live mariachi music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Chavez was in attendance because he is a close friend of Macias. The two went to college together, Chavez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI have to confess, governor, I didn\u2019t tell you when I called you, but I know all the reasons why Fernando can\u2019t be a judge,\u201d Chavez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In reality, he said, Macias will make an excellent judge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe is a quintessential New Mexican, and I can\u2019t think of a finer person you could have appointed,\u201d Chavez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Macias was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Edward Chavez. Schultz was sworn in by Justice Petra Maes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cLisa has a very impressive background,\u201d Maes said. \u201cYou will do a wonderful job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Schultz thanked many mentors and others for inspiring her, and also thanked her female partner of 31 years, who Schultz described as \u201cmy heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cTu es mi vida,\u201d Schultz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Macias thanked his wife and mentors, and also Mayor Chavez for coming to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis is another individual who is going to put <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> on an international level,\u201d Macias said of Chavez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Richardson and Schultz both recognized former Judge Silvia Cano-Garcia, who Schultz is replacing. Cano-Garcia recently died after a long battle with cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> asked for a moment of silence for Cano-Garcia. Schultz said she is a role model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHer compassion as a driving force in this court provides big shoes and a big path for me to walk in,\u201d Schultz said. \u201cI will do my best to try to fill those shoes and walk that path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Democrat Macias faces Republican Rita Nu\u00f1ez-Neumann on Nov. 7.
