Gabby Giffords, the Arizona Democrat who survived a shooting in 2011, shows the unparalleled success the gun control movement has had this year, in the wake of continued mass shootings.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/blogs\/stateline\/2018\/08\/02\/after-parkland-states-pass-50-new-gun-control-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Stateline\u00a0<\/em>reported in August<\/a>, state lawmakers \u2014 inspired by a movement led by the student survivors of the February mass shooting in Parkland, Florida \u2014 enacted more than 50 new laws in the six months following the incident. The laws, including some passed in Republican-controlled states, ranged from banning bump stocks to allowing authorities to temporarily disarm potentially violent people under \u201cred flag\u201d laws.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers were inspired by the Parkland students, who took to television, state legislatures and the streets to make their voices heard. The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School left 17 high school students and staff dead.<\/p>\n<p>Before this year, however, such success in passing gun control legislation was not the trend in U.S. politics.
