\"\"<\/a>Gov. Bill Richardson has only Democrat Lisa Schultz to consider for appointment to the district court vacancy created by the death of Silvia Cano-Garcia. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Republican Rita Nu\u00f1ez Neumann was the other applicant to appear today before a judicial nominating commission that opted to recommend only Schultz. The decision came after Neumann attacked the commission during her interview, saying the system favors Democrats and that, in the past 12 years, a commission in Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> Ana<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> has never recommended a Republican applicant to the governor.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Neumann said that made other qualified Republicans afraid to apply for judgeships, because their opponents in elections can use against them the fact that they didn\u2019t get past the commission.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is used as a political sword against an opponent, and that is wrong,\u201d Neumann said. \u201c\u2026What message does that send to the public? It sends a message that this commission has become a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Neumann has applied many times, but her name has never been forwarded to the governor.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a good attorney. I do care. There\u2019s no reason for you not to send my name except there aren\u2019t any Republican votes on this committee \u2013 maybe one,\u201d Neumann said. \u201cSometimes you have to make a last stand, and I believe that\u2019s what I\u2019m doing here.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Schultz, who will most likely be appointed to the children\u2019s court position, faces Republican Janetta Hicks in November for the right to keep the job. Neumann is facing newly appointed District Judge Fernando Macias, a Democrat, for the other children\u2019s court position in November.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard Bosson, a member of the commission and a Democrat, pointed out to Neumann that there were nine Democrats and nine Republicans on the commission. Neumann said that was deceptive.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are two types of Republicans \u2013 those who are Republicans for registration purposes, and those who are Republicans,\u201d Neumann said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

She said there was only one Republican on the commission \u2013 Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> attorney William Anderson \u2013 who she has ever seen at a Republican event. Anderson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, in questioning Neumann, pointed out that the last nominating committee was accused by a Democratic applicant of not sending her name to the governor for consideration because Republicans on the commission hijacked the process.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cNow we\u2019re being criticized by our own party,\u201d Anderson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cDo you expect the commission to appoint or select someone they truly don\u2019t feel is qualified, despite their party affiliations?<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, they should not,\u201d Neumann said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Following the interviews and a closed session, it was Anderson who made the motion to forward only Schultz\u2019s name to the governor. The decision was unanimous.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Neumann said during her interview that she did not expect to be recommended to the governor.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI realized when I came in here that by doing this I would obviously not be selected,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I had to do what I felt was right.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Schultz said during her interview she was \u201cdelighted\u201d to have the opportunity to be considered for a judgeship, and said she is in the process of closing her law practice in anticipation of becoming a judge.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI have a tremendously solid work ethic, and I\u2019m ready to go,\u201d Schultz said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

She said her philosophy as a children\u2019s court judge would be, \u201cfor the safety, welfare and health of the community, to exercise intervention at the earliest age possible to break the cycle.\u201d She spoke extensively about her belief that abuse at an early age leads to juvenile delinquency, and said that abuse must be stopped.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Assuming Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> appoints Schultz, she will have to begin learning her new job while also campaigning to keep it. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
