{"id":646241,"date":"2018-11-16T08:12:26","date_gmt":"2018-11-16T15:12:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=646241"},"modified":"2018-11-16T08:12:26","modified_gmt":"2018-11-16T15:12:26","slug":"the-value-of-our-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2018\/11\/the-value-of-our-work\/","title":{"rendered":"The value of our work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I wrote in a commentary published at\u00a0NMPolitics.net\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2018\/11\/a-journalists-view-of-the-groundswell-that-lifted-torres-small-to-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last Friday<\/a>, I&#8217;ve been working since President Donald Trump&#8217;s surprise (to me) victory in 2016 to better understand how systems are impacting people \u2013 and how people are responding. That election revealed that journalists need to do a better job of understanding what&#8217;s happening on the ground in our communities.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s how I knew it was premature for other news organizations to call the race to replace Steve Pear<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">ce in the U.S. House for Republican Yvette Herrell last Tuesday evening. I knew the tally at the time didn&#8217;t account for the groundswell on the left since Trump&#8217;s election that I&#8217;d documented in and around Las Cruces. But that&#8217;s what I did, writing in an article that <a href=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2018\/11\/the-race-between-yvette-herrell-and-xochitl-torres-small-isnt-over\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the race wasn&#8217;t over<\/a>. Last Wednesday, those outstanding Do\u00f1a Ana County ballots <a href=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2018\/11\/torres-small-comes-from-behind-to-win-2nd-congressional-district-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proved me right<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Local, independent journalists who are on the ground in their communities are critical to democracy.
