Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n is seeking a position in U.S. House leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The day after Democrats took control of the U.S. House of Representatives, Luj\u00e1n announced he now wants to become assistant Democratic leader, the fourth-highest position in Democratic leadership.<\/p>\n<p>For the last two election cycles, Luj\u00e1n was chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which helps elect Democrats to the U.S. House.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"module align-left half type-aside\">\n<h3>About this article<\/h3>\n<p>This article comes from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmpoliticalreport.com\/2018\/11\/07\/lujan-seeks-u-s-house-leadership-position\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Mexico Political Report<\/a>,\u00a0a nonprofit news organization\u00a0focused on promoting a greater public understanding of politics and policy in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Having won the majority on Tuesday, Democrats will elect a speaker of the House, opening up another leadership position.<\/p>\n<p>South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn currently holds the position of assistant democratic leader, the third-highest position in the caucus. But Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California will likely move from minority leader\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/nancy-pelosi-poised-return-house-speaker-n931721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to speaker of the House<\/a>, and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland is likely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2018\/live-updates\/midterms\/midterm-election-updates\/hoyer-announces-bid-for-house-majority-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to become majority leader<\/a>. Clyburn, who was rumored to seek the speaker position himself, said Tuesday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/news\/politics-government\/article221261650.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also will seek to step up a position<\/a>\u00a0to majority whip.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2010\/11\/assistant-leader-for-clyburn-045077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">created the assistant leader position in 2010<\/a>.\u00a0<i>Politico\u00a0<\/i>reported Democrats created the leadership spot to \u201cstop a pending showdown\u201d between Hoyer and Clyburn.<\/p>\n<p>In his letter to Democratic colleagues, Luj\u00e1n mentioned the DCCC\u2019s success during the current election cycle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo succeed, we must welcome ideas from all corners of our Caucus,\u201d Luj\u00e1n said. \u201cTo protect our majority and hold the Trump administration and Congressional Republicans accountable, we must bring our strategy directly to the American people, listen to their concerns, and show them how we are working for them.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Some Democrats have expressed concern about the ages of the Democratic leadership. Pelosi and Clyburn are each 78 and Hoyer is 79. Luj\u00e1n is just 46.<\/p>\n<p>Luj\u00e1n serves in New Mexico\u2019s 3rd Congressional District and won a sixth-term in the position Tuesday.
