{"id":644,"date":"2006-09-29T11:49:00","date_gmt":"2006-09-29T17:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/09\/up-aerospace-still-trying-to-recover-rocket-but-says-oct-21-launch-shouldnt-be-affected\/"},"modified":"2006-09-29T11:49:00","modified_gmt":"2006-09-29T17:49:00","slug":"up-aerospace-still-trying-to-recover-rocket-but-says-oct-21-launch-shouldnt-be-affected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2006\/09\/up-aerospace-still-trying-to-recover-rocket-but-says-oct-21-launch-shouldnt-be-affected\/","title":{"rendered":"UP Aerospace still trying to recover rocket, but says Oct. 21 launch shouldn&#8217;t be affected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Officials with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upaerospace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">UP Aerospace<\/a> are still working to recover the rocket launched from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceportamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spaceport America<\/a> this week, but now say they are confident the problem that caused it to fall short of space won\u2019t affect a scheduled launch in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Monday launch went smoothly for the first nine seconds, until the rocket reached an altitude of 24,000 feet, the company said in a news release today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAt that point, an anomaly occurred\u201d that \u201ccaused a wobble in the vehicle\u2019s flight trajectory,\u201d the release states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ultimately, the rocket reached 42,000 feet \u2013 about 8 miles \u2013 before returning to earth. That was well short of the approximately 70-mile goal of space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The company also revealed that it doesn\u2019t know exactly where the rocket touched down. Radar lost track of it 2,000 feet above the ground, and personnel are continuing to search the area where that happened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The rugged terrain of the area, complicated by unusually overgrown brush from this summer\u2019s rains, is complicating the search.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Until officials find the craft, they may not be able to determine exactly what caused the anomaly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019re certainly anxious to characterize the anomaly that occurred,\u201d UP Aerospace President Jerry Larson said in the release. \u201c\u2026 Once all of the air and ground data are assembled and processed, we\u2019ll know exactly what happened, and make whatever corrections are necessary for the next flight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He added that, because the rocket performed well until the anomaly, \u201cwe would be extremely surprised if we discover a major issue.\u201d Because of that, the company does not expect the problem to affect its launch schedule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The next launch is set for 1 p.m. on Oct. 21. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Officials with UP Aerospace are still working to recover the rocket launched from Spaceport America this week, but now say they are confident the problem that caused it to fall short of space won\u2019t affect a scheduled launch in October.
