Republican Yvette Herrell and Democrat Xochitl Torres Small are campaigning to represent the district.<\/p>\n<p>Getting a handle on how much cash is pouring in can be tricky. Fortunately, there are a couple important tools.<\/p>\n<p>One, the Federal Elections Commission requires a lot more timely reporting of campaign finance data than does New Mexico. For federal races, like this one, campaign reports available online are being filed as this is written.<\/p>\n<p>Two, ProPublica, a national nonprofit news organization, has created a tremendous resource for tracking money in federal elections that they humbly call their \u201celection bot.\u201d The bot collects campaign data and other information from a variety of sources and updates every 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"module align-left half type-aside\">\n<h3>About this article<\/h3>\n<p>This article comes from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmindepth.com\/2018\/10\/31\/feverish-spending-in-nm-cd2-with-12-million-raised-to-date\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Mexico In Depth<\/a>. Sign up for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmindepth.us6.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=1d2ab093d81b992e50978b363&amp;id=9294743d38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their newsletter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Here\u2019s the election bot\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/itemizer\/races\/2018\/states\/nm\/house\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">landing page<\/a>\u00a0for the New Mexico CD2 race, which includes a list of outside spenders.<\/p>\n<p>Torres Small has tripled Herrell\u2019s fundraising, $3.8 million to $1.2 million. Outside groups have outstripped both combined, spending a little more than $7 million to date.\u00a0(That\u2019s $12 million total in the race for those keeping score, and we\u2019re still days away from Election Day. We\u2019ll have to wait several weeks to see how much money people sink into the race once it\u2019s all said and done.)<\/p>\n<p>The CD2 race is rated a toss-up by the Cook Political Report, a respected national group that rates the prospects of candidates. That means it\u2019s one of the campaigns that could determine which political party controls the U.S. House of Representatives. No surprise, then, that outside money is being dropped on southern New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest spenders are the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee. Another ad titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2IMtTJfe1Wo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Golden Years<\/a>\u201d says that the plan she supports would \u201cend Medicare as we know it.\u201d The plan they are referring to is Sen. Bernie Sanders\u2019 proposal for universal health care.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ll3v9yOkrNE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> with KRWG, Torres Small said her focus is on defending the current Affordable Care Act, and said she believed there are ways to ensure everyone is covered without having a single-payer system.<\/p>\n<p>The other three ads by the NRCC attack Torres Small by saying she is a liberal activist who will be a \u201cfoot soldier for the radical left\u2019s agenda\u201d and work with Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi has given $4,000 to Torres Small, and the Pelosi-affiliated PAC to the Future has donated $10,000 to her. Pelosi told the Albuquerque Journal that Torres Small is a priority for her. Torres Small said she has not decided whether she will vote for Pelosi for House speaker if she wins the election, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/52f6b8ed8264408d85df6e45b9abde87\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The DCCC has created several TV advertisements attacking Yvette Herrell. They focus on Herrell\u2019s trustworthiness, highlighting her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/1158210\/theres-a-440k-question-in-nms-cd2-election.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failure to disclose<\/a>\u00a0rental income her family\u2019s company receives from the state, in annual disclosures required while she was a state representative.<\/p>\n<p>Two other big spenders, AFT Solidarity and Women Vote!, took up the same theme in their ad, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QanGHEDEzRs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We Paid for it<\/a>.\u201d Herrell said she is a partner in name only of a real estate company owned by her father, and that the secretary of state told her she didn\u2019t need to disclose the rental income because she didn\u2019t personally receive it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ximena Tapia is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmindepth.com\/series\/fellowship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 academic Fellow<\/a>\u00a0at New Mexico In Depth.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getting a handle on how much cash is pouring in can be tricky.
