The troops \u2014 who are expected to be in place by next week \u2014 would be directed to help border authorities stop a caravan of thousands of Central American migrants who are making their way through Mexico toward the United States, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/10\/25\/politics\/mattis-troops-southern-border\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Brandon Judd of the National Border Patrol Council is right when he says on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/foxandfriends?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@foxandfriends<\/a> that the Democrat inspired laws make it tough for us to stop people at the Border. MUST BE CHANDED, but I am bringing out the military for this National Emergency. They will be stopped!<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1055414972635926528?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 25, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With the midterm elections approaching, Republicans across the country have been raising alarm about the threat posed by those migrants. At a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2018\/10\/22\/Donald-trump-rally-ted-cruz-houston-eleciton-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rally in Houston<\/a> on Monday, Trump suggested the migrants may be funded by Democrats, and claimed that some of the migrants are Middle Eastern. There is no evidence for either claim.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">And earlier this week, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2018\/10\/22\/ted-cruz-suggests-sending-national-guard-border-stop-migrant-caravan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it may be necessary to staff up the border.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I think this caravan is a serious threat,\u201d Cruz told reporters in Houston on Monday. \u201cWhen you see thousands of people pledging to come violate U.S. law, to cross into this country illegally, we have to treat that seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe have to stop it,\u201d Cruz added, \u201cwhether that means putting Border Patrol at the border to stop them or whether that means calling up the National Guard.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The delegation is expected to include some active-duty forces, primarily from the Army, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/amphtml\/news\/politics\/wp\/2018\/10\/25\/pentagon-plans-to-dispatch-800-more-troops-to-u-s-mexico-border-in-response-to-migrant-caravan\/?tid=ss_tw&amp;utm_term=.3399602da22c&amp;__twitter_impression=true&amp;noredirect=on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Washington Post<\/a>. CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/10\/25\/politics\/mattis-troops-southern-border\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that the troops would not engage in \u201clethal operations\u201d to stop the migrants, but would reinforce fencing at spots where migrants might cross, and also provide tents and medical care for border authorities. It was not immediately clear Thursday morning where along the border the reinforcements would be stationed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The president also directed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2018\/04\/04\/trump-administration-send-guard-units-southern-border\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">troops<\/a> to the border in April in an effort to deter illegal immigration. The tide of border crossings has persisted under Trump, and the number of families crossing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2018\/10\/17\/family-border-apprehensions-hit-new-record-trump-threatens-new-crackdo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surged<\/a> in September to record levels.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry deployed National Guard troops to the border in summer 2014, and Gov. Greg Abbott <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2015\/12\/15\/abbott-orders-national-guard-stay-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kept them in place<\/a> after taking office.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Gov.
