Before the candidates\u2019 speeches to the council began, tribal leaders brought up the comments Arnold-Jones made on a Fox News show weeks earlier about her opponent Deb Haaland.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, the All Pueblo Council of Governors addressed the recent remarks by Republican congressional candidate Janice Arnold Jones in which she questioned the ethnicity of her Democrat opponent, Deb Haaland of Laguna Pueblo,\u201d according to a statement from the council. \u201cThe APCG took issue with her remarks and advised her that many of the Governors were offended. Mrs. Arnold Jones respectfully apologized and the Governors accepted her apology.\u201d<\/p>\n
Arnold-Jones said she was \u201cpublicly rebuked.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is not my desire to offend you or anybody else, so I apologized to them,\u201d Arnold-Jones told\u00a0NM Political Report<\/i>.<\/p>\n
Haaland, who sent a representative from her campaign to the Thursday meeting, told\u00a0NM Political Report<\/i>\u00a0she is pleased the council is taking an \u201cactive role\u201d in this year\u2019s election.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the most important election of our lifetime, and the activation of voters in our tribal communities will will ensure their voice at the table,\u201d Haaland said.<\/p>\n
During an interview with Arnold-Jones earlier this month, a Fox News host mentioned that Haaland could be the first Native American woman elected to Congress. Arnold-Jones responded, \u201cThat\u2019s what they say, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n
After prompting by the host, Arnold-Jones clarified her comment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that her lineage is Laguna, but she is a military brat, just like I am,\u201d Arnold-Jones said on Fox and Friends. \u201cI think it evokes images that she was raised on a reservation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Arnold-Jones told\u00a0NM Political Report<\/i>\u00a0she was trying to speak to the similarities between herself and her Democratic opponent.<\/p>\n
\u201cDebra and I are much more similar than we are different, that was my point and no other point,\u201d Arnold-Jones said. \u201cShe is not a victim, she\u2019s a military brat just like me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Arnold-Jones said she is on friendly terms with Haaland, which is how she knew Haaland\u2019s father served in the U.S. Marine Corp.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou always hope that you say things the best way that you can say them,\u201d Arnold-Jones said.<\/p>\n
