Bill Richardson doesn\u2019t want a lot of people seeing it.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> had tentatively agreed Monday to one debate at Congregation Albert in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> on Oct. 15, but insisted that the debate not be televised. When his Republican opponent, John Dendahl, wouldn\u2019t budge on the television issue, the debate fell through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/1600\/Dendahl%2C%20John.12.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/5892\/2386\/200\/Dendahl%2C%20John.11.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>\u2019s campaign manager, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqtrib.com\/news\/2006\/sep\/26\/richardson-refuses-televised-debate-says-dendahl-t\/\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Tribune<\/a>, said Dendahl would launch negative attacks rather than focusing on the issues, and said such attacks would be a disservice to viewers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe governor debating at the U.N. or with a world leader for the release of a hostage is different from somebody who had made it clear that his intent is negative attacks that bring down the state,\u201d said <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> campaign manager Amanda Cooper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> agreed to several televised debates against Republican John Sanchez in 2002. This year, two <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> television stations have offered to host televised debates, and Dendahl has agreed to both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The reality is that \u201cthe state\u201d benefits from debates viewed by its voters, no matter what Cooper says. Debates, even those that include negative attacks, are a healthy part of any democracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">President Bush and Republican leaders in <st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state> have often discouraged debate on <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and terrorism. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is doing the same here, though I suspect he would decry Bush for doing it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s presidential hopes that would be affected by a televised debate. Negative attacks could hurt <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s chances of reaching the so-called magic 60 percent of the vote in November that he would use to claim overwhelming support in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Unless <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> budges on the television issue, it\u2019s likely that there won\u2019t be any debates. Blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marioburgos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mario Burgos<\/a> recently took amateur video of the debate between U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M. and her challenger, Democrat Patricia Madrid, after <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> refused to allow the debate to be televised, and posted it on his Web site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s people realize this. If they don\u2019t want video of a debate to exist, in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, they can\u2019t have a debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">They\u2019re looking to blame Dendahl.
