Paul Pacheco, R-Albuquerque, in February, 2016.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Longtime Republican State Rep.\u00a0Larry Larra\u00f1aga dropped his re-election bid on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The influential voice on the state budget made the surprise announcement in a statement Tuesday afternoon, after more than two decades in office.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"module align-left half type-aside\">\n<h3>About this article<\/h3>\n<p>This article comes from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmpoliticalreport.com\/873133\/longtime-republican-legislator-larranaga-ends-reelection-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Mexico Political Report<\/a>,\u00a0a nonprofit news organization\u00a0focused on promoting a greater public understanding of politics and policy in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cDuring the past few weeks, my family and I have experienced some new challenges,\u201d the Republican legislator from Albuquerque said in a statement. \u201cAfter much reflection and discussion with my family, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw my name from this year\u2019s ballot and retire from the House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since House District 27, which Larra\u00f1aga has represented since 1994, is completely within Bernalillo County, the Bernalillo County Republican Party will choose his replacement on the November ballot. That board has until next Tuesday to do that.<\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Nate Gentry of Albuquerque, who is also not running for re-election, praised Larra\u00f1aga.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLarry is a consensus builder. He is never bombastic, and his diligent work to find bipartisan solutions on the state budget and other policy matters has earned him respect on both sides of the aisle,\u201d Gentry said. \u201cIt has been a privilege to work with him these past eight years. I wish him and his family well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His last major piece of legislation was the creation of a \u201crainy day fund\u201d to help the state save boomtime oil and gas revenue for when prices drop.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Larra\u00f1aga chaired the House Appropriations and Finance Committee in 2015 and 2016 \u2014 the only two years that Republicans held the majority in the House during his time in the chamber.<\/p>\n<p>Larra\u00f1aga isn\u2019t the only long-serving legislator who won\u2019t return in January. Rep. Nick Salazar, D-Ohkay Owingeh, did not run for another term this year. Rep.
