The American Civil Liberties Union has launched another sweeping challenge to President Donald Trump’s administration, this time in a federal lawsuit over the administration\u2019s \u201cgutting of asylum protections for immigrants fleeing domestic violence and gang brutality.\u201d<\/p>\n

The case, filed Tuesday in federal court in Washington, D.C., takes aim at a June 11 decision from U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions stating that, in general, victims of gang violence and domestic abuse do not qualify for asylum in the United States.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mere fact that a country may have problems effectively policing certain crimes \u2014 such as domestic violence or gang violence \u2014 or that certain populations are more likely to be victims of crime, cannot itself establish an asylum claim,\u201d Sessions wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n
