Bill Richardson said Friday that he and his party stayed 30 minutes at the scene of Saturday\u2019s houseboat accident at Elephant Butte State Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the eyewitness who told NMI <a href=\"http:\/\/newmexicoindependent.com\/35837\/its-like-they-tucked-their-heads-and-said-see-ya\">the governor left within two or three minutes<\/a> is standing firm on his version of the events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the two parks officers who responded to last Saturday\u2019s accident bolstered that account late Friday, when they said through an agency spokesperson that they did not see the governor or his chief of staff, Brian Condit, when they <a href=\"http:\/\/newmexicoindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/2009-10-0094B.pdf\">arrived on the scene<\/a>,\u00a020 minutes after the crash.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The exact wording of Richardson\u2019s statement, according to the Independent, was, \u201cFirst of all, it was 30 minutes that we waited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Independent article was published late Friday. On Saturday, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/upfront\/1201520upfront09-12-09.htm\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> published this statement from Richardson spokesman Gilbert Gallegos:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Fay, the owner of the boat, stayed at the scene. Nobody else was required to stay, although the governor and Brian Condit stayed in the vicinity for about 30 minutes before leaving for a dinner engagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCondit left his cell phone number with Mr. Fay and was available for the rest of the evening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the vicinity? What does that mean?<\/p>\n<p>You might recall the Independent previously publishing <a href=\"http:\/\/newmexicoindependent.com\/35988\/richardson-wont-say-whether-condit-complied-with-the-law\">an article<\/a> in which some disputed the assertion that Condit was not required to stick around.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If Gov.
