I don’t aim to cover every story at NMPolitics.net. With a staff of just one (me), that’s not possible. Instead, I try to invest my time and effort in telling stories that push the conversation to a deeper and more nuanced level, or that aren’t being told by other news organizations.<\/p>\n

That’s why I spent months digging into efforts to build a stronger voting culture in Do\u00f1a Ana County.\u00a0My in-depth article<\/a>\u00a0has gotten widespread attention, including tweets from as far away\u00a0as New York City<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0an editorial in The Santa Fe New Mexican<\/a>\u00a0calling what’s happening in the county “truly exciting” and urging other county clerks to replicate it. Two New Mexico newspapers are republishing my article this week.<\/p>\n

I’ve also focused recently on writing\u00a0a series of opinion pieces<\/a>\u00a0on border and immigration issues. I live in the borderlands, and I’m trying to help bring that perspective into the conversation on these difficult topics.<\/p>\n

One recent donor to NMPolitics.net cited my border writing as the reason for giving. “Gaining a local perspective on the effect Trump’s policies are having in the borderlands offers a depth of understanding I would not otherwise get from reading The NY Times and Washington Post,” the donor wrote. “… I admire your commitment to speaking truth to power, and your attention to the historical conditions that led us to this point. We are in a fight for our democracy and your work helps by informing people.”<\/p>\n

That’s my goal. I have a 7-year-old daughter and I worry about the world we’re preparing to hand over to her. It’s encouraging to know my work is having an impact.<\/p>\n
