Steve Pearce is no longer part of the GOP whip team after\u00a0he sided\u00a0with Democrats on a trade bill last week.<\/p>\n<p>The Albuquerque Journal has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/599591\/politics\/rep-pearce-stripped-of-house-leadership-position.html\" target=\"_blank\">the story<\/a>, reporting that Pearce, &#8220;widely viewed as one of the most conservative members of the House,&#8221; was in &#8220;the rare position of voting with Democrats on major legislation&#8221; when he opposed the trade bill <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/598199\/news\/nm-dems-oppose-obama-trade-deal.html\" target=\"_blank\">last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pearce, Southern New Mexico&#8217;s representative, was quoted by the Journal as saying he &#8220;strongly&#8221; supports free-trade agreements but doesn&#8217;t believe the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/the-fix\/wp\/2015\/04\/22\/the-trade-deal-explained-for-people-who-fall-asleep-hearing-about-trade-deals\/\" target=\"_blank\">fast-track<\/a> legislation &#8220;provided the guarantees needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe (bill) missed significant principles that need to be included \u2026 like competitive currency standards, fair trading practices, and including the opinion of the American people,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Technically, Pearce and two others were removed from the whip team for voting against GOP leadership\u00a0on a procedural vote leading up to the actual vote on the legislation. As <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/245136-boehner-takes-his-retribution\" target=\"_blank\">The Hill<\/a> explained, Majority Whip\u00a0Steve Scalise&#8217;s decision to boot the three from his team &#8220;was based on longstanding whip team rules that stated members must &#8216;vote as a team on procedural matters&#8217; but are free to vote against leadership on underlying legislation.&#8221; That&#8217;s according to &#8220;a source close to the whip team,&#8221; The Hill reported.<\/p>\n<p>After the vote last week,\u00a0House Speaker John Boehner\u00a0said Republicans &#8220;are a team&#8221; and have &#8220;worked hard to stay in the majority,&#8221; according to the Journal.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And I expect our team to act like a team, and frankly, I made it pretty clear I wasn\u2019t very happy,&#8221; Boehner said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The National Journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationaljournal.com\/congress\/three-booted-from-gop-whip-team-as-leaders-crack-down-20150616\" target=\"_blank\">quoted Pearce<\/a> about being removed from leadership as saying, &#8220;not much has changed in the House.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;I came here to represent the people of the 2nd Congressional District of New Mexico. That means considering each vote on its merits and striving to do the right thing for them,&#8221; Pearce was quoted as saying. &#8220;Sometimes that demands casting hard votes, as I did last week. I always strive to vote on principle and that won&#8217;t change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The legislation has created unusual alliances &#8212; House Republican leaders and the president on one side, and on the other some Republicans including Pearce and most\u00a0Democrats &#8212; including New Mexico&#8217;s Michelle Lujan Grisham and Ben Ray Lujan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>This article has been updated to clarify that Pearce was removed from leadership for the\u00a0procedural vote before\u00a0the actual vote on the legislation.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
